For the Journey

Any day spent with you is my favorite day. So today is my new favorite day. ~A.A. Milne

"You crown the year with Your goodness, and Your paths drip with abundance." ~Psalm 65:11

As happens around the middle of January, a forecast earlier this week called for icy conditions in our area this weekend.  The models ultimately trended north so we don’t anticipate anything down here besides really cold rain.  But it was this same time last year that the most unexpected snow storm covered south Louisiana with inches and inches of fluffy, white snow.

Nine inches. And, yes, I measured in several different places across the yard to make sure it was, in fact, nine inches!

It started falling and didn’t stop for quite awhile.  I put my comfy chair in front of the window and just sat there watching it.  I couldn’t believe it.  I still can’t believe it.  After the horror and sadness of cancer, it was the lovliest of days.  Seth was working out of town, and Mason was at Tech.  The only thing that could’ve made that week better was if they had been here.

Unfortunately, our closets don’t support such a beautiful wintry event.  Everything within me wants to invest in a big, puffy jacket with a fur lined hood, chunky scarves and snow boots.  They would just sit in the closet, super cute yet unused.  But at least we could have cute pictures should we ever have the opportunity to wear them.

Also, playing in the snow in Louisiana looks exactly like you imagine it would.  These kids have no idea what they’re doing!  But it was a noble effort.

Snow covered the ground for three days before it finally melted. School was closed for a week. It was the most unexpected surprise in all my 25 years of living here. I don't anticipate it ever happening again, but I can certainly hope.

Hannah Kate said it best.  After the snow had fallen and we stood on the back porch just staring at it in wonder and amazement, not really believing this was our very own backyard in south Louisiana, she looked at me and said, “Mom, it’s like our very own Narnia in our backyard!”
